Santiago Hellen

Santiago Hellen is a trans non-binary photographer and digital artist. He was born in La Plata, Argentina, on March 26th, 1999.
His work is highly influenced by his childhood musical education based on Shin’ichi Suzuki’s technique where learning happens the same way as the acquisition of the mother tongue. This early approach to art, along with being raised by a father who was a painter and a sculptor, contributed to a curious and artistic personality. Hellen leaned towards visual arts through time and discovered his passion for photography at the age of twelve when he got his first camera. He practiced self-photography for six years until he started to portrait other people.
Hellen’s artwork puts a full flashlight on the inclusion of gender and ethnic diversity —on all those bodies that have been traversed by social stigma. It proposes a reflection and questioning of the status quo and at the same time suggests another perspective of the world through their own experience as a non-binary person. The particular use of color is by excellence the formal element present in all of theirartworks, which reinforces the image in an inescapable way.
Their artwork was exhibited in the Netherlands, Mexico, and Argentina, and was used for cover art in many books and CDs. Santiago resides in his hometown and majors in Visual Arts at the National University of La Plata.
